Kent Shindig (old-time jam)
The Kent Shindig, an open jam for old-time music and dance, takes place year-round, every first Sunday of the month, from 5 to 8 p.m. The new location is Europe Gyro-Pizza, at 107 South Depeyster Street in downtown Kent, Ohio.
The event, which is free, attracts many of northeast Ohio's best acoustic musicians, playing fiddles, banjos, guitars, mandolins, hammered and lap dulcimers, harmonicas, wooden flutes, double basses, percussion, etc., as well as clog and flatfoot dancers. The music consists primarily of lively Appalachian reels, as well as the occasional Irish tune, Civil War tune, etc. All are welcome to play (bring an acoustic instrument), dance, and/or listen.
Europe Gyro-Pizza sells beer, soft drinks, and pizza and other Italian foods (and their calzones are particularly good). Come enjoy some great food, drinks, and old-time music. Following the jam, from 8 p.m. to close, will be the Gyro's weekly Open Mike Night, hosted by the wonderful folk and rock musician XE LA.
If you like the Kent Shindig, you might also like the Black Squirrel Jam, which meets on the first and second Fridays of each month:
