folkjam.org infrastructure upgrades

Over the past few weeks we have been working to make some pretty big improvements behind the scenes on folkjam.org.

When we started the site it was running in a shared hosting environment. This was affordable, and we thought it would be our home for at least a year or two.

In our first four weeks we received much more attention and traffic than we expected, which is wonderful. It also meant that the site was not as responsive to our users as we had wanted it to be. In this same time frame our hosting provider began having problems of their own on the server that housed folkjam.org. The database back-end that holds all of our data started to crash on a regular basis, leaving our visitors with a screen full of errors about the database server going away. At the start of October we stopped promoting the site.

We have worked with that hosting provider for several weeks to resolve the problem in their environment and have finally given up. As of today folkjam.org has been moved to a much more appropriate hosting environment.

With this change the site's performance is greatly improved, with average page load times of .5 seconds rather than 3-4 seconds. We can now return to expanding the features and reach of folkjam.org.

Thank you for your patience and support as we have worked to improve the infrastructure behind folkjam.org.
